Description
Located only 90 minutes from Christchurch, Akaroa is a gorgeous historic French Village with a harbour that is so beautiful, it has to be seen to be believed. An Akaroa Harbour Nature Cruise will allow you to experience this paradise on earth as you cruise around the extinct volcanic crater, spotting the huge variety of wildlife (including the rare, NZ native Hector's Dolphin) and taking in the incredible scenery.
Departing every day (weather permitting), the luxurious 20 metre long catamaran – the Black Cat – affords you the best views of this natural wonderland. With two decks, covered seating, bar and on-board toilets, the Black Cat is the largest vessel on the harbour.
During the cruise, the friendly crew and the Skipper will entertain you with their extensive knowledge of the nature, wildlife and history of the harbour. As you listen to the skipper’s commentary, keep a look out for the gorgeous little White Flippered Blue Penguin – the smallest penguin in the world – as well as the endangered yellow-eyed penguin and the five different cormorant (shag) species that inhabit the area.
As you pass the rocks near Seal Bay, you will be delighted to see the sunbathing New Zealand Fur Seals, but the most coveted sighting of the day will undoubtedly be the Hector's Dolphins. These New Zealand native dolphins are the world's smallest and rarest species, and are so popular on the cruise that Black Cat Cruises have introduced a 'dolphin promise' – if on the rare chance you do not see any on the day of your cruise – you can return for free on another day! These playful and curious little dolphins happily greet the boat on most days, and as a special bonus, their calves can be seen between October and March each year!
During your cruise, you will also stop to see the Lucas Bay Salmon Farm, where thousands of salmon – from fingerlings to adults – are farmed to produce the world renowned Akaroa Salmon. Back on the boat, the phenomenal scenery will take your breath away. The many ancient lava flows that now form cliffs are often sheer and have a unique look to them. One such cliff boasts a 500-foot sheer side and also has a fascinating history, as you will learn from the Skipper. Other highlights include the beautiful Scenery Nook – a volcanic amphitheatre that is striking in hues of purple, pink and red – while the fascinating Nikau Palm Gully is the absolute southernmost point that the Nikau palms will grow.
Akaroa is a truly memorable place and your cruise around the harbour will leave you with a feeling of peace and tranquility that will stay with you for quite a while.
